Nile Sustainable Forestry (NSF) is transforming South Sudan’s charcoal and forestry sector through sustainable agroforestry, community ownership, and responsible forest restoration. Starting in Eastern Equatoria, NSF works with farmers and communities to restore degraded land, create sustainable sources of fuelwood and charcoal, and improve household incomes.

Our Mission
Our mission is to reduce the environmental damage caused by traditional charcoal production by developing a sustainable wood-to-charcoal value chain rooted in agroforestry.
Farmers plant fast-growing, non-invasive tree species on one-acre plots, while intercropping with food crops. The model provides renewable fuelwood, restores degraded land and creates additional income opportunities through poles, charcoal and carbon-related products.

Turning Sustainable Forestry Into Measurable Impact
Restore Degraded Land
Restore 300 hectares through sustainable tree planting during the Eastern Equatoria pilot.
Engage Farmers
Work with 600 farmers through training, agroforestry, tree planting, and sustainable forestry activities.
Improve Tree Survival
Target an 85% tree survival rate through effective planting, monitoring, field support, and digital tracking.
Develop Sustainable Charcoal Value Chains
Create sustainable sources of fuelwood and connect community-produced charcoal and forestry products to markets, including the Nimule–Juba corridor.
Strengthen Farmer Cooperatives
Build farmer-shareholder cooperatives capable of managing forestry assets, generating income, and reinvesting in their communities.
Support Climate and Forestry Policy
Promote the integration of agroforestry and sustainable forestry incentives into national plans and support wider climate and restoration initiatives.

South Sudan's Forests Are Under Pressure
South Sudan’s forests faced severe degradation from civil wars (1983-2005), economic hardships, and unsustainable charcoal/logging, dropping from 68% cover pre-1983 to significant losses (2,160 ha humid primary forest 2002-2023 per Global Forest Watch). Eastern Equatoria hotspots like Magwi, Imatong Mountains, and Nimule suffer high deforestation from teak/mahogany demand and refugee fuel needs.

The Eastern Equatoria pilot will provide the foundation for testing, refining, and scaling the NSF model nationally.

Agroforestry & Reforestation
We support farmers to establish tree-based farming systems that restore degraded land while allowing food production to continue through intercropping.
Sustainable Charcoal Production
NSF promotes sustainable wood-to-charcoal systems and improved kiln technologies to reduce pressure on natural forests while improving charcoal production.
Farmer Training
Farmers receive training in tree planting, pruning, agroforestry practices, sustainable kiln operation, and forest management.
Community Nurseries
Community nurseries provide seedlings for restoration activities and strengthen local participation in tree-growing initiatives.
Market Linkages
NSF aims to connect farmers and cooperatives with markets for poles, charcoal, and other sustainable forestry products, with a focus on the Nimule–Juba market corridor.
Carbon & Climate
